PARISH-BASED PROGRAMS/ORGANIZATIONS
(and those with parish contacts)Acolytes and Extraordinary Ministers of the Eucharist (EME): These ministries are a means for men to offer service at Mass both at the altar and in the distribution of Holy Communion. In order to become an acolyte, one must attend preparatory classes. Acolytes are installed at a special Mass celebrated by the Bishop in the spring. Once an acolyte is installed, he is encouraged to serve as an EME. EMEs bring communion to homebound and institution-bound parishioners on Sundays. Contact
Altar Servers: This ministry offers an opportunity for boys in fifth grade through high school to participate in the celebration of Mass in a very special way. General training begins after confirmation. Being an altar server at Cathedral has the added dimension of having the opportunity to serve on a Pontifical Crew (serving for the Bishop). Contact

Lectors and Readers: This ministry is a means for men and women to offer service at Mass by reading scripture and specific prayers. To become a Lector, one must attend preparatory classes. Lectors are installed at a special Mass celebrated by the Bishop in the spring. Contact
Legion of Mary began as a lay organization in Ireland in 1921 to help the growth of an authentic ecclesiastic communion in the parish and to reawaken missionary zeal. It has the apostolic Blessing of Pope John Paul II. The object of the Legion of May is to glorify God through the striving to holiness of its members developed by prayer, study and service, in cooperation with the pastor of the church and in union with Mary, for the intent of bringing Christ to those in need. Active members study the handbook, pray a daily rosary, attend weekly meetings, and perform two hours of weekly work assignments. Auxiliary members pray a daily rosary and the prayers of the Legion. Perpetual Adoration was started at Cathedral in 1959. Twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, there is a person praying in the presence of Jesus in the Tabernacle. Contact
Rosary for Life is for anyone who would like to meet at the Holy Family Chapel at 6:30 PM on Monday nights to say the Rosary. The intention of the Rosary is respect for all human life, and especially an end to abortion. Contact
LOTW (Parish Retreat Program): Retreats are given by our own parish priests and fellow parishioners. Held over a weekend at Cathedral, retreats provide an opportunity to grow closer to Jesus and to make and renew friendships in Christ with fellow parishioners as a Catholic Christian Community. Bishops Pastoral Plan for Pro-Life Activities exists to make parishioners more aware of pro-life issues, and to recruit volunteers to help meet those needs. This parish-based program relies on the diocesan and state pro-life offices for information and guidance. Its objectives are to coordinate parish implementation for the Respect Life Programs, promote and assist crisis pregnancy agencies, post-abortion counseling, and to foster public awareness of the need for a constitutional amendment and other laws and policies to restore legal protection to the unborn. Evangelization: This parish organization follows the direction of our Lord to go out and teach all nations. This group is striving to find new ways to reach out to all people in Cathedral parish to live their faith more abundantly. Contact
Healing Hearts (HH) is a grief outreach ministry that offers a Christ-centered approach to meet the needs of those who have lost a loved one. At Cathedral, trained volunteers, under the direction of the pastor, provide aid to the bereaved on a one-on-one basis, offering support throughout the grief process until services are no longer needed. For those who have lost an infant through miscarriage, stillbirth, neonatal death or Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, HH provides a caring and supportive volunteer who also has experienced the loss of a baby. Matt Talbot Kitchen furnishes nutritious meals at no charge for those in need. Two meals are served every day of the year to men, women and children. Cathedral volunteers prepare and serve meals at the kitchen on the third Tuesday of each month. Contact
Parish Nurse Program is run by volunteer nurses accredited through the St. Elizabeth Regional Medical Center who are committed to the healing ministry of Jesus. The nurses work with pastors and others dedicated to holistic health ministry to promote spiritual, physical, emotional, intellectual, and social well-being. They provide assessment, health counseling, education, referral to community resources, teaching of lay volunteers, and prayer. Activities include blood pressure screening, CPR classes, education on Advance Directives and Medical Durable Power of Attorney, hospital and home visitations. A parish nurse does not provide direct patient care, but acts in a supportive role - providing holistic, preventive care services and assisting in the spiritual and emotional needs of the parish family. St. Vincent de Paul Society: There is no need, which is outside the concern of The Society of St. Vincent De Paul. An organization dedicated to serving Christ in our suffering brothers and sisters, SVDP seeks to put the gospel message into action: I was hungry, I was thirsty, I was a stranger, I was naked, I was sick, I was in prisonand you cared! Stewardship is a spiritual program dedicated to teaching Gods message about the value and benefits of sharing our gifts of time, talent and treasure. People working on this program strive to research and fulfill the many needs of our parish community now and into the future. Contact

Adult Education: Throughout the year programs are offered on prayer, the traditions, teachings and practices of the Catholic Faith. These programs are geared toward Catholics desiring to learn more about the Faith. Classes will be publicized in the bulletin as they are scheduled. Contact
Cathedral Elementary/Junior High School: Contact
CCD provides students who attend grades 1 through 8 in a non-Catholic school with a formal education in the fundamentals of the Catholic faith. Classes meet Wednesdays September to May in Cathedral School. CCD teachers are volunteers from the parish who see this as an opportunity to be involved in the efforts of the Church to spread the Catholic faith to our youth. Contact
Holy Family Pre-School and Extended Day Care: Contact
Home-School Association serves as a liaison between Cathedral School teachers/staff and parents/families. This organization coordinates the major fund-raiser including the annual school auction. It is also involved with various that occur annually such as the Book Fair and Catholic Schools week. Serving on the board allows parents the opportunity to be more closely involved with school activities, assist the principal, and encourage involvement of other parents through volunteer opportunities. RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) is the process through which adults are baptized into the Christian community, and the baptized members of other Christian denominations are brought into the full communion of the Catholic Church. Contact
Sunday School is held downstairs in the church during the 10:30 AM Mass during the school year. The liturgy for children ages 3 - 6 consists of a gospel story followed by songs, games or crafts. The lesson ends with a prayer. There is a nominal fee to cover materials. Contact

FINANCE / FUND-RAISING
500 Club is a monthly lottery drawing held on the first Wednesday of each month. The drawing has the numbers 1-500 in it. Each number costs $5.00 per month. There are ten winners each month. The prize money returned each month is equal to 65% of the total money in the drawing. The remaining 35% is set aside for purchasing items for the school such as textbooks, school repairs, playground equipment, etc. The 500 Club welcomes new members anytime. Contact
Cathedral Art Show: This major annual fund-raising project of the Altar Society is held the second week of September. Artists and craftsmen from a wide geographical area display and sell their works. A quiche luncheon is served on Friday. Proceeds go toward the needs of the parish. Contact
Cathedral School Auction: Every fall the parish holds a combined silent and oral auction for the purpose of raising funds for extraordinary needs of the school. All adult parishioners are invited to an evening of fellowship that includes an appetizer buffet. Contact

Label and Boxtop Collections: This program earns supplies and dollars for Cathedral School. Parishioners are encouraged to participate by saving General Mills and Betty Crocker boxtops, and UPCs from the following brands: Super Saver, IGA, TV, Marquee, Rainbow, Best Yet, and Super Tru. Contact
$crip Program raises funds for the Cathedral Home-School Association, Godparent Program, Altar Society, Knights of Columbus and St. Vincent de Paul Society. The $crip program sells gift certificates from various local merchants to parishioners. Each merchant sells certificates to the $crip program at a discount varying from 2% to 30%. The program then sells the certificates at face value. $crip is sold after all Masses except Sunday evening, and is available during the week at the Rectory. All parishioners are encouraged to use $crip. Contact

MENS ORGANIZATIONS
Knights of Columbus is an international Catholic, family, fraternal service organization that has a tradition of protection. The Knights support the church, community, and family and youth activities through volunteer and charitable contributions. They provide programs of support for Brother Knights, and they support the needy, disabled, Special Olympics, disaster victims and the poor. Contact
Serra Club is an organization of laymen who promote vocations to the priesthood and religious life and are willing to build and develop a strong spiritual life within them. They host many receptions such as Ordination, Profession of Vows, etc. Quarterly dues are assessed to cover the cost of their work. Contact

MUSIC MINISTRIES
Adult Choir: This ministry exists to glorify God and enhance the prayers of the people through song. It is comprised of dedicated men and women who sing for Sunday (usually 10:30) Mass and other special parish and diocesan liturgies. The choir, in season from September through Pentecost, has a repertoire of chant, classical and contemporary works. Rehearsals are on Wednesday evenings. Becoming a member of Cathedral Choir will provide you the opportunity to grow in your faith and become part of a terrific community within the parishthe music community. Contact
Cantors and Organists: In the absence of the choir, trained cantors perform an important ministry by leading the congregation in common sacred song and responsorial singing. New cantors are welcome. The Cathedral is fortunate to have the Casavant pipe organone of the finest organs in Lincoln. Organists accompany the congregational and choral singing, and also provide instrumental pieces before and after Sunday Masses. Audition required for cantor or organist. Contact
Folk Choir sings each Sunday at the 6:00 PM Mass. It offers a contemporary sound to the music of the Liturgy. Rehearsal time is 5:00 PM on Sunday in the Bishops Chapel. Contact

SOCIAL ACTIVITIES
Card Marathon Group (women and couples) meets monthly September through May. Members take turns hosting the bridge and pinochle sessions. The fee is $9.00 per year; proceeds go to a local Catholic service. Contact
Mens Golf League begins the first Monday after Daylight Savings Time and concludes in mid-August. Men golf on Mondays at Pioneers Golf Course with tee times beginning at 5:00 PM. At the end of league play and play-offs, there is an outing at Pine Lake Golf Course and a banquet for couples golf. Contact
Mixed Bowling League: Single or married, this is fun for anyone who likes to bowl. The league starts the last Thursday in August and finishes in late April. Bowling begins at 9:00 PM. Contact
Womens Golf League runs the first week in May through mid-August. Tee times begin at 4:22 PM at HiMark Golf Course. Contact

WOMENS ORGANIZATIONS
Altar Society: The purpose of Altar Society is to unite all women in the parish in religious, educational and social activities, and to assist the Rector in the care of the Altar and Sanctuary for the welfare of the parish. Cathedral Altar Society consists of individual circles with memberships ranging from 20 to 90 years of age. We invite you to join us in serving our Lord. Contact
Confraternity of Christian Mothers: The purpose of the group is to learn more about the dignity and responsibility we have in marriage as wives and mothers. We seek help to sanctify our own lives and those of our husbands and children. The group meets the first Saturday of the month after 8:10 Mass. There is prayer time and a short program that offers a source of instruction and inspiration concerning the sanctification of mothers, our homes and communities. Contact
St. Ann's Bible Study: The major focus of this Bible study is the Mystery of the Divine Mercy. Women meet on Wednesday mornings during the school year in members homes. Contact

YOUTH ORGANIZATIONS
Advocates of St. Angela Merci is a prayer group of Cathedral School seventh and eighth grade girls who meet on a regular basis after school. The Advocates meet for prayer and work together to create and put up the school's main bulletin board located near the school office. In addition to their gatherings, members of the group volunteer to lead all school and family Rosaries, and attend the monthly First Friday Devotions at the Pink Sisters' Adoration Chapel. Contact
Kids for Jesus (K4J) is a program for Catholic kids that allows them to learn in a very fun way, and to practice their faith in common, simple ways in their daily lives. Since we learn best by doing, CKNet gives practical and simple activities that are fun for the whole family as they learn the truths of our faith. With their registered membership they receive Monthly Mission Packets full of games, activities, puzzles and ideas to practice their faith. There is a special insert each month to give parents great ideas about how they can help their children learn and live their Catholic faith. The program is designed for children in grades 2-6. Godparent Program is a four-year program for students in grades 9-12. The primary purpose is to allow high school students to deepen, explore and share their Catholic faith. Weekly meetings are held in the homes of adult leaders. Topics range from Scripture to morality to everyday issues teens face. Students have an opportunity to discuss these issues and to learn the Catholic Churchs teaching in these areas. Godparent retreats, Advent and Lenten services, ski trips, trips to Worlds of Fun, and other social activities are available to students. Contact
Scouts: Boy Scout Troop 54 is composed of boys 11-18 years old with adult leadership. The purpose of the Boy Scouts is to introduce young men to the role of leadership and to instill good moral values, above-reproach character, and sense of duty to God and country through fun indoor teachings and exciting outdoor activities. Meetings are held on Thursdays at 7:30 PM in Crowley Hall. Visitors are welcome during the meetings. Contact
Cub Scouts is for boys in grades 1 through 5. Parents and Leaders work together to help boys achieve: character development, spiritual growth, good citizenship, sportsmanship and fitness, family understanding, Respectful relationships, Personal achievement, friendly service, fun and adventure, and preparation for Boy Scouts. Brownie and Girl Scout Troops (grades 2 through 8) meet after school in the basement of the church. Girl Scouts participate in projects and community programs to develop a set of values and help guide their actions, but most importantly, to learn how to work with and support each other and have a great time. Soldiers of St. Sebastian is a group of altar servers who volunteer their time to expand their serving responsibilities. These seventh and eighth graders serve at Cathedral School Masses Mondays and Fridays, and at all special children's Masses. They play a prominent role in parish liturgies such as funerals, First Friday devotions, Stations of the Cross, Benediction, First Confession, First Holy Communion, and the May Crowning procession. In addition, each day after lunch, one of the young men spends his recess time in adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. The group recently conducted a successful fund-raising drive to purchase new cassocks and surplices. Contact

OTHER PARISH PROGRAMS
Cathedral Classics brings 60+ year-old parishioners together in an active atmosphere of participation in the life of the parish and faith enrichment. Classics build community and offer friendship, education and spirituality. We represent to the parish: gifts of wisdom through life experiences lived in faith, hope through hard times lived in fortitude, generosity of loving and giving even in sacrifice. Meetings are held the last Friday of each month in Crowley Hall after the 8:10 AM Mass. Coffee and rolls are served. Members take turns helping with refreshments. Contact
Cathedral Tours are available upon request. A guided tour includes information on the history of the parish and the physical structurewindows, mosaics, statues, etc. Guests are also invited to view the Bishops Chapel, sacristy and choir loft. Contact
Greeter Ministry serves as a living expression of God's kindness. We offer a kind welcome to those entering the Cathedral to worship. Individuals, couples and families are encouraged to participate in this ministry. Contact
Offertory Gifts: Couples and families have an opportunity to participate in the Mass in a special way by carrying the gifts of bread, wine and water to the Altar at Offertory. Contact
Parish Council is a consultative and collaborative body designed to assist the pastor in making decisions regarding both spiritual and temporal matters. It is made up of nine elected members and two appointed trustees. A synopsis of the proceedings from the monthly meetings is published in the bulletin. Contact
Ushers welcome individuals to Cathedral, assist with seating, assign a family or couple to take up the gifts, hand out bulletins, straighten the church following Masses, and other duties as needed, including special celebrations by the Bishop. There are monthly assignments. Contact

LINCOLN-AREA/ DIOCESAN ORGANIZATIONS/PROGRAMS
Birthright is a pregnancy support group offering help by caring, trained volunteers. Birthright provides alternatives to abortion with care and concern for all pregnant women and those women concerned about pregnancy. Free pregnancy tests, maternity clothes and layettes are provided. Referrals are made to health care professionals for medical care. This program is funded entirely by private donations. Contact
Calix is Latin for chalice or cupfrom the cup that inebriates to the cup that sanctifies. Monthly meetings are held the last Sunday of the month at Madonna Rehabilitation Hospital, beginning with Mass at 5:00 PM and followed by the meeting. This program enhances Alcoholics/Drugs Anonymous programs but is not meant as a replacement. The program offers a half-day of recollection and reconciliation once a year. Contact
Catholic Daughters is a national organization established in 1903 and dedicated to our Blessed Mother. The purpose of the organization is to participate in the religious, charitable and educational apostolate of the Church. In previous years weve conducted an essay, poster, art and poetry contest for our Catholic school children. In 1999 we donated $5,000 for a window at the St. Gregory the Great Seminary. In 2000 we hosted the C.D.A. state convention in Lincoln. Meetings are the second Tuesday of the month. New members are welcome. Contact

Apostolate of Divine Mercy seeks to promote the Divine Mercy Message and Devotion as it is found in Scripture, Sacred Tradition, and in the life and writings of St. Maria Faustina. The Apostolate accomplishes these goals by offering educational materials, distributing the Image of the Divine Mercy throughout the diocese, and providing speakers.
Bereavement: In addition to the parish-based Healing Hearts program, a series of six sessions offered by the diocese gives participants an opportunity to understand issues such as the grief process, a Christian perspective on suffering, effects of grief on relationships, comfort from Scripture, and restoring balance. Held at the Catholic Social Services office each spring and fall, this group setting allows time for discussion and is directed by a professional counselor and a priest. A special Mass on the Feast of the Holy Innocents on December 28 is celebrated in honor of babies who have died.
Divorced, Separated and Widowed Catholics meet on the second Sunday of the month under the guidance of the Family Life Office. The mis- sion is to offer healing, education and support to those who have experienced the loss of a spouse.
Engaged Encounter is a program for engaged couples provide talks, discussions and prayer time to help them prepare intellectually and spiritually for the Sacrament of Marriage. Engaged Encounter address topics such as honesty and openness in relationships, sexuality, and Natural Family Planning (NFP).
Marriage Encounter weekends help married couples communicate more intimately with one another in order to deepen and enrich their relationship. An atmosphere is created where the couple can concentrate exclusively on one another in a private and confidential environment.
Natural Family Planning (NFP) is a means through which a couple may either achieve or avoid pregnancy. It is a morally acceptable, medically safe and highly reliable method of family planning. A couple enters the program with an introductory session and continues with a series of individualized follow-up sessions.
Retrouvaille helps couples pick up the pieces of a troubled marriage and rebuild a loving relationship.
Teens Encounter Christ (TEC) weekends are for high school Seniors and Juniors and college Freshmen and Sophomores. Adults and young adults give talks, guide discussions, lead activities, and pray with the teens. Five weekends throughout the school year are held in various locations in the state.

Kings Men/Ladies of the Eucharist are organizations available at the Pink Sisters. They provide an opportunity to assist the sisters and to deepen ones spiritual life. Pink Sisters, 1040 S Cotner, 489-0765. Contact
Magnificat is a ministry to Catholic women that began in New Orleans in 1981 and now has more than 70 chapters. Magnificat fosters in women of all ages a desire to grow in holiness. Following the examples of Mary and Elizabeth, this woman-to-woman ministry attempts to generate a lively faith in God and His presence in our lives along with a love for Mary and the Church. The group holds four meetings a year that center around a prayer meal and feature a speaker, usually a woman, sharing her journey of faith. The meal also provides a time for praise and worship and individual prayer. Along with days of renewal and Life in the Spirit Seminars, Magnificat also sponsors Lord Teach Me to Pray, an ongoing prayer/study based on the writing of St. Ignatius of Loyola. Contact
Project Rachel provides post-abortion counseling, healing from the pain of abortion, and reconciliation for both grieving women and men. Contact

Support Groups for Mentally Ill: Our Lady of Hope is a support group for those suffering with any kind of mental illness and their supporting family members. Meetings are the first Thursday of each month at The Madonna Rehabilitation Hospital. Mass is offered in the Madonna Chapel at 6:45 PM and the meeting follows at 7:30 in the Sheridan Room. Each meeting includes prayer, a speaker, and time for discussion. Contact
Guild of St. Benedict Joseph Labre is a Spiritual, Marion, Eucharistic and Ecumenical support group for the emotionally troubled and the mentally ill and their families and friends. Informational brochures are available in the vestibule of the church. Contact
