PARISH NURSE

Considering a Sleep Aid?  You’ve tried everything from cutting our caffeine to having a glass of warm milk before bedtime, but you still can’t sleep.  Are sleeping pills the answer?
Sleep aids won’t cure insomnia, which may be a symptom of many factors, from pain, disease and sleep disorders to stress, medications and poor sleep habits.  However, occasional use of sleeping pills may help you get some rest.
Your health care provider should help determine what’s best for you.  In general, three types of sleep aids are available:  Over the counter (OTC). Many contain antihistamines, which may make you drowsy.  OTC drugs are best used for the occasional sleepless night.  Note: OTC sleep aids may not be safe for pregnant women and people with other certain conditions – read the warning label.  Prescription only.  These range from sedating antidepressants to older-class sleeping pills (such as Halcion, ProSom and Restoril) to the newer class that includes zolpidem (Ambien), eszopiclone (Lunesta) and zaleplon (Sonata).  Compare side effects and recommended frequency of use, and find out which may be habit forming.
Supplements.  Several dietary supplements are popular as sleep aids, most notably the hormone melatonin.  Although melatonin may help some people with sleep problems, proper dosage is uncertain and its long-term effects are unknown. And there’s no solid scientific evidence that other supplements, such as kava, chamomile and valerian, are safe or effective as sleep aids.
To avoid harmful drug interactions, be sure to tell your health care provider about all other medications you’re taking, including OTC drugs and herbal supplements.  Report any side effects, and never mix alcohol with sleeping pills.  If sleep troubles continue, tell your provider right away.
