Parish Council Minutes – October 2, 2001

We had received one bid for painting the ceiling of the church and others are forthcoming. The bids should be ready for the November meeting and will be compared at that time.

A discussion on the Matching Gift campaign recognized the generosity of the gifts received and the need to encourage everyone to participate. A budget comparison will be ready for our November meeting, along with Commission Reports.

The School Auction was discussed and the importance of the Parish recognizing this as an entire Parish event was emphasized. The school and the education of our children is a work of the entire Parish and therefore we hope that everyone will support this important fundraiser.

Parish Council September 4, 2001

Discussion continued concerning a bench for the Bishop’s Garden. Al Hamersky offered his expertise and Miller Fabrication was to be contacted for designs. Bids are being received for painting the ceiling in the Cathedral. Paul Reinsch explained the parish and school budgets. Father Tucker announced that we will not receive any income from the School Endowment this quarter due to the fluctuations in the Stock Market, though we will still receive 4% interest on our savings with the Diocesan Investment and Loan. Questions were asked about how the Home and School Association and Hot Lunch programs will spend their money. Half of the money in the Home and School account ($14,000) will be spent for replacing the windows in 3 classrooms (this will complete the window replacement project). Money made by the Hot Lunch program can only be spent on equipment, tables and chairs, etc. that will be primarily used for the Hot Lunch program. The Council decided to report quarterly on budget comparisons for the school and the church

Old Business: The stairwells have been repainted at all three entrances through the generous gift of John Bordogna. Nebraska Nursery has replaced plants that died in the Bishop’s Garden and further research is being done by the Council to find a bench for the garden.

New Business: The letter to parishioners concerning the matching gift was read to the Parish Council and changes were suggested. Father is interested in starting a Building Maintenance Committee that will survey the entire complex to form a plan for preventative and immediate maintenance. The Council gave names of people that would possibly have the ability and time to be on this committee. Paul Reinsch distributed the fiscal year end financial report and a discussion followed. The Diocese recently put together a set of guidelines for accounting and the parish is currently working on implementing the practices that were not already in place. The plan will help all parishes to follow the same accounting practices so that there is uniformity in tracking and reporting financial resources. The finance committee will provide quarterly reports to the Council. The School financial report was also discussed. The cost per pupil for 2000-01 was $2,800 which is an increase of $1,000 ($1,800 was reported for the previous year, though not accurate due to work in progress of getting the chart of accounts reorganized, so the figure was probably closer to $2,400) which reflects the efforts the School has made to increase salaries and benefits. The Cathedral Bus service has been discontinued due to lack of participants and the financial solvency of the program. A bus will be kept for field trips and the cost of maintaining this bus will come out of consolidated fees.

News for June 2001:

The Parish Council is a consultative and collaborative body designed to assist the pastor in making decisions regarding both spiritual and temporal matters. The Cathedral Parish Council is made up of nine elected members and two appointed trustees. The Council meets monthly and from this date forward under my pastorate a synopsis of our meeting proceedings will be published in the bulletin. For the Council to be more effective, communication between the Council and the parish members needs to be increased. Please read the Council proceedings to be more aware of the Cathedral Parish work.July 3, Council Meeting News:

Bishop’s Garden: Work continues to get the watering system working properly and to find a bench that will be donated in memory of Kathi Krause.

Ceiling Report: To keep the ceiling from falling we need to lower the humidity in the church. The company repairing our air conditioner has solved part of the problem, but everyone needs to do their part and keep the doors shut. We are still soliciting bids to repaint the ceiling in the main body of the Church, while the stairwells are being painted from the generous donation of a Cathedral parishioner.

Financial Report: New guidelines from the Diocese, that will be adopted in the next year, will put all parishes on a similar accounting system to make year end reporting and Pastorate changes easier.

Cathedral School: A gift of new computers for the computer lab, two servers and network wiring for the school and daycare and a $40,000.00 matching gift to the School Endowment was received from an anonymous donor. More details will follow.
